Sportsmen’s Bill Shot Down

Senate Republicans issued a surprise defeat to a “sportsmen’s bill” on Monday evening, defeating the bipartisan measure that would expand conservation and hunters access to public lands on a budget point of order. With several senators absent for a Monday evening vote, Republicans sided with Senate Budget Committee ranking member Jeff Sessions, R-AL, and blocked the bill because it violates that letter of the 2011 Budget Control Act. The bill had been expected to pass, despite concerns environmentalists have about a provision limiting EPA regulation of lead in bullets and other hunting implements.
