Debate on the massive defense bill that authorizes Pentagon programs is expected to continue through the end of the week after the Senate finally moved to consider the bill on Wednesday. So far, with the help of 11 Republicans, the Democratic-controlled chamber has passed a key measure restoring the Pentagon’s power to invest in green energy, repudiating a narrow Senate Armed Services Committee vote in May curtailing the military’s ability to invest in biofuels. An amendment by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., also secured enough votes to authorize up to 1,000 more Marine Corps personnel to enhance security at U.S. embassies and other diplomatic facilities overseas.
